So for the last 6 weeks we have been facilitating a class at church The Parent Adventure by Rodney and Selma Wilson. The class is meant to help parents prepare their children for a life with God. As parents what is our purpose the answer is Deuteronomy 6:5-7 " Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your strength. These words that I am giving you today are to be in your heart. Repeat them to your children. Talk about them when you sit in your house and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up." The greatest gift you can give your children is a love for God and an understanding that all of life is about Him. Parenting is a gift from God. The Wilson's talk about 5 areas that will help your children prepare for a life with God.
Letting go- helping you to see your role as a steward ( not an owner) of your children. As with all in life it is His and we are stewards of our life. Letting go starts with all the little good byes along the way from the smallest to largest. Instead of dreading the good-byes around every corner we should all use them to fuel our parenting. We are simply but significantly, their managers, getting them ready for their own adventures with God that they will live out long after we are gone. Jeremiah 29:11 " I know the plans I have for you..."
A yes home-2 Corinthians 1:20 " Every one of God's promises is ' Yes' in Him" God has filled his word with Yes' to us and do we parent in that way. Most of the time the immediate answer is no and why should it be. A Yes home empowers, A Yes home builds self-esteem and A Yes home encourages. Yes homes are kid magnets.
Let's Talk-Proverbs 18:21 " Life and death are in the power of the tongue."Showing interest in your children's world at every stage of their childhood creates an environment for you to connect them to God and to the great adventure He has planned just for them. Start talking to your children now about the small stuff ( what car they like, shows and toys) so later they will come to you with the big stuff ( who to date, other choices ).
Pain Happens- Matthew 6:34 " each day has enough trouble of its own."Pain must happen throughout life from skinned knees to not bein accepted to the college of choice. Teaching your child how to manage their pain with God's help will better prepare them for life
Celebrate- 2 Samuel 6:21 " I will celebrate before the Lord." His word is full of celebrations for everyday things. We too should celebrate the daily things with our children so they can see the wonder of God.
The Parent Adventure is a great study that will help you to better prepare your children for a life with God. It will change the way you parent and they way you interact with other parents.
